qq citations:

1

cant believe some of the stuff people write on this site. When it comes to resources, genuine support etc we have no right to compete with the likes of Toulouse. There is no quick answer to this situation , for example there is no Welsh version of Jauzion or Maka. Toulouse as somebody has already said have huge resources and following. I truly believe the Scarlets can win the HC one day but this will only happen when the structure below it starts working properly, i.e. academies, semi-pro, new amauter competition, new stadium etc. Liam davies is a good example of the new breed of player coming through, he is light years ahead of Dwayne Peel at the same age, lets make sure we make the most of our talent available and attract quality 'outsiders' who can add to these.

2

I agree with you to a certain extent, but Toulouse look like a side that actually trains together 2-3 times a week. Each player knows where they should be and what they should be doing. They are well drilled and extremley professional.

Why is our lineout such a disaster? Its been a disaster all season, and most of last season, so why hasn`t it been sorted out? If it is practised in training why can`t the players perform it in a game?

Our back play is stuck in the 1980s. We only appear to have one back move and thats a miss move in the centre. Granted we are missing a quality outside half ( who has Ceirion upset that hes down to 3rd in the pecking order?), but I happen to think that we`ve got a decent set of backs.

The problem is we don`t have a modern, forward thinking coach to coach them.

3

lets be honest boys it was like watching a ferrari against a ford anglia.it's all well and good saying we did o.k. against the best side in europe we should be competing with these teams on an equal footing or else there is no point in entering the comp, totally agree about the lineout and the kicking the ball back to them that is bread and buitter to the french.the lineout especially needs urgent attention as it hasn't functioned well all season

4

Why do Toulouse Have to resort to Dirty Tactics to win Games? Their side is Awesome, There's no need to Eye Gouge other teams when they've got the line up they have. Hope the Scarlets Decide to Cite some of Yeterday's incidents.

Don't stick up for them. I agree they are one of the best club sides of all-time and a joy to watch, but what happened repeatedly on Saturday was despicable.

There is no place for it in rugby and the French really need to get their house in order because it is quite simply a less civilised sport out there.

I really hope action is taken and the ERC need to start fronting up to the French rather than tip-toeing around them as they tend to do.

bon allez, j en remet une couche :

You don't honestly think we don't "accept the result" surely? We were well beaten by an outstanding team - no-one would possibly argue otherwise.

What people are making a fuss over is the foul behaviour by Toulouse players - I don't know if you're French or Welsh (you certainly seem very confused) but gouging is just not acceptable and repulses people involved in rugby in the UK and Ireland. Rightly or wrongly, the club may not make an issue of it, but that doesn't make it ok.

Unfortunately there is still a brute culture in French rugby that needs to be eradicated and the French need to be made aware of what is considered uncivilised.

Coming on here running the Scarlets down and salivating over the French day in, day out really does make you look very, very sad to be honest.

cette phrase est terrible! :sleeping::P:P

Isitolo doit rester à Toulouse.

anecdote sur brenan et thomas:

from the Swensea Evening paper.

"For some reason people are writing us off in the UK and are tipping us not to get out of the group, which has urged us on a bit. We have a big tradition in this competition and we proved a point out there today"

from the Welsh National newspaper today.

"Myself and Trevor have been surfing the websites and telling the boys what is being said.It seems to have worked in nmotivation for this match, because we proved a point against the Scarlets. Winning it last season has made us veven more determined to win it again. Once you have experienced that feeling, you certainly want to experience it again. etc"

sur nos joueurs pdt la 3eme mi temps:

Didn't see many Toulouse players in the bar opposite our hotel getting wasted Saturday night, but there were plenty of ours. I had no idea so many of our players smoked. The whole team weren't there by any means and I don't begrudge anyone a couple of pints after the game.

However, we weren't celebrating a famous victory so there's no excuse for going so over the top. Maybe we shouldn't be surprised that our players can't compete against those of other teams if that's the approach they take. It wasn't a private party so they're obviously happy for us to see them on the beer and fags. Doesn't portray a particularly good impression of the club.

the majority of the tolouse players probably went to restaurants and eat, drank and smoked all night. i saw fiorini in brenans and he looked wrecked. regan king said in the players night that the french players smoke like chimnies and drink heavily and have a very casual attitude towards training and he is amazed that they play so well on a match day, and that it must be that the french are naturally athletic

Par ce que de "On a cinq blessées, dont un à l'oeil, ça pourrait être une fourchette" à "on a cinq joueurs blessés à l'oeil par des fourchettes", le pas est très facile à franchir...et la rumeur très simple

What made us struggle was the completely idiotic tactics of kicking possesion back to a strong Toulouse back line. Geech has struggled tactically three weeks in a row now. Forwards had a very strong game but our backs are looking way out of form at the moment. Dayglo looked good today but Hart looked out of form and IMHO should have been replaced much earlier by Rees. Alex King looked awfull today due mainly to Geech's non sensical tactics. Another bad day at the office. Could have been a lot lot worse The HC is still in our own hands.

Forwards did OK - some great rolling mauls. The scrum looked solid. The lineout seemed to work well - maybe because they cut out 90% of the running round in circles and just left Raf throw it in to a jumper.

Backs were appauling. But it felt like tactics were to blame rather than individuals.

Geech. We have some of the best backs in Europe. These are not a loose grouping of Scotsmen thrown together to play Italy in the six nations. These are a team of talented backs who can make serious ground against the best ... and they came up against some of the best. So what are they told to do ? Kick. And then Kick. And then Kick. And then watch Toulouse run the ball back again. Then Kick again. Even Matt Dawson who's strength is the mixture of his play - pass, run, pass, kick, pass .... what was he doing tonight. Kicking every second time he got the ball. The whole point of the box kick is it's element of surprise.

Why are you doing this ? One definition of madness is doing the same thing again and again when it's clear it's not working. Where was the change of tactics at half time ?

Toulouse weren't up to much either. They kicked far too much possession away - witness Freddie Michalak's stupid, pointless kick at the end which set up your tying penalty chance.

Toulouse were committing fewer players to the ruck, particuarly when the ball was lost, which enabled them to play up in King's face and restrict the movement of the ball becasue the Wasps back line was so flat.

Why the bloody hell can't you be as inept when you play Sarries?

Speaking to players after the game, they were criticised after last week for not kicking enough - today they did as they were told and failed again.

Can't we find that happy medium? If it isn't working by half time, CHANGE IT, or is that too much to ask these days? Where is the Munster away mentality where LOL says there is absolutely no way we are going to lose this game?

uthor: Heathen

Date: 30-10-05 20:55

Curious game in many respects. At least we did not lose, but there is still a hell of a lot that needs to improve.

Basics - too many dropped passes and whilst the number ofturnovers appeared to be less that last week, we do not get numbers to the breakdown to secure our ball.

Pack - stuck manfully to their task. Was surprised that Skivs replaced Shawsie - our game was crying out for Tom Rees to inject some vibrancy - Hart could have gone to lock. Did exceptionally well to win turnover ball on our own line and stop what seemed a certain 3rd try to ST. Rafa's last ditch try saving tackle was also commendable. JOC was at fault for their second - left a big hole for them to pour through.

Daws quite honestly had a poor game by his standards, apart from one or two clearing kicks. He was caught in posession several times and was very slow at clearing the rucks.

Alex - don't know what game he was supposed to be playing today, but I cannot think of one instance where he put the line away with anything like an opportunity. As for the drop goal attempts - enough said.

All the goal kickers had a mare to some degree - theirs more than Giz.

Something has to change - we are home to Briz on Friday. In our current situation, it is a must win game.

So our HEC survival hangs on a thread. Unless ST slip up elswhere, we have to win 4 out of 4 to have any chance of getting out of the group. NPC season is finished - call in WG as a consultant

Match report

Mark Van Gisbergen kept his cool to slot an 87th minute penalty that gave London Wasps a last gasp draw against reigning champions Toulouse – and a lifeline in Pool 6.

Toulouse, who arrived seeking to make it eight wins in a row in the tournament, scored two great tries, but conceded a penalty five metres out from their own line after their scrum collapsed.

That gave Wasps an agonising decision to take. Should they go for the draw via Van Gisbergen’s boot, or shoot for a win by taking the scrum?

Alain Rolland told acting skipper John Hart that the scrum would be the last play of the match and Director of Rugby Iain McGeechan gave the signal from the side to go for goal.

”The Pool is now 7-5-4-3 and it is all to play for” said McGeechan.

“If it had been 9-5-4-1, with Toulouse out in front, there would have been nothing to play for.

“We called it from the touchline and we were happy to see the kick go over.

”It was probably our best performance upfront this season and the reason we were still in the game at the end was because of the massive effort from the forwards.

Three Van Gisbergen penalties, the last on the stroke of half-time, meant Wasps had their noses in front at the break. A try for Gareth Thomas, diving under Alex King as he followed a Trevor Brennan kick ahead was converted by Jean-Baptiste Ellisalde to give Toulouse their only first half points.

Ellisalde missed with three penalties and a conversion in the game and wing Cedric Heymans was also wide from the half way mark, as the champions’ goal-kicking left a lot to be desired.

Toulouse hit the front for a second time nine minutes into the second half when they conjured up a brilliant try for wing Vincent Clerc.

Fabien Pelous won the lineout Yannick Jauzion made the break and man of the match Jean Bouilou and Thomas linked to send Clerc in for the try.

Van Gisbergen levelled the scores after 53 minute with his fourth penalty, but Frederic Michalak responded immediately with a wide-angled drop goal after Toulouse had regathered from the restart

Toulouse clung on to their lead deep into injury time and looked likely to win the game – and notch a first win over Wasps in three attempts.

But a loose kick by Michalak into the home 22 allowed Wasps to break out through Paul Sackey and his long kick and chase forced Toulouse to concede that last fatal scrum.

scarlets/gunners:

Outside-half Gareth Bowen slotted a last-minute conversion from the sideline to snatch a late late win at Stradey Park.

Edinburgh had led throughout the match, but watched the scoreboard go from 5-13 to 15-13 in the final 10 minutes as the home crowd spurred their heroes home. The Scots were shattered after the match, having done everything but win after last weekend’s memorable victory over London Wasps.

Wales backrower Dafydd Jones scored the last-minute try to set up Bowen’s kick, and the long-term injury victim was happy to come back with a bang.

“We always base our season on the Heineken Cup and this keeps us in it,” he said. “Once you get one loss, it gets very difficult, and it was unfortunate we had to go away to Toulouse in our first match.

“We knew we had to win this one, which put extra pressure on us. We’re not happy with our set-piece today, and we didn’t get a lot of things right, but we ground out a result which keeps us in the competition.”

Scarlets coach Nigel Davies added: “Now we have a massive two games in December (against London Wasps). This win makes all the difference to our season.

“This is what great rugby is all about – testing ourselves against the very best in Europe. It raises the bar for all of us.

“Today, our lineout was poor, and we’ll be working on that, but the result was all-important coming off the heavy defeat to Toulouse.”

Edinburgh coach Todd Blackadder was gracious in defeat.

“Great rugby brings out the best in everyone – especially when it goes right to the wire like that. This is a massive blow to us, but this pool was always going to be an uphill struggle.

“We didn’t come away with nothing – we have a point which may help us in the latter stages of the competition. We were the first team to come here and others are going to find it a tough task.”

The Scarlets’ reputation as the Welsh standard-bearers in Europe has been looking a little tarnished lately, and the last thing coach Gareth Jenkins needed after last weekend’s seven-try rugby lesson in Toulouse was the loss of his workhorse captain Simon Easterby (broken nose) and inspirational scrum-half Dwayne Peel (ankle).

The Scarlets looked like a team missing its captain and play-maker in the early exchanges yesterday, with Edinburgh spending the first 15 minutes camped in the Scarlets’ quarter.

A missed Chris Paterson goal and Dafydd James’ try-saving tackle on Simon Webster saved the home side’s blushes, but Edinburgh, their confidence boosted by last weekend’s stunning win over former European champions London Wasps, kept their heads and were finally rewarded in the 15th minute.

Lock Scott Murray was driven over from a lineout 15 metres from the Llanelli line and Paterson’s conversion gave the visitors a well-deserved 7-0 lead.

Murray – fresh from a man-of-the-match performance against Wasps – had a field day in the lineouts. His constant thieving of the Scarlets ball prompted the home side to try short lineouts, quick lineouts and complicated lineouts, but all to no avail. Murray rose above everything the Scarlets tried and he will be a crucial member of Frank Hadden’s Scotland side next month as they take on Samoa, Argentina and New Zealand.

The home side eventually gave up kicking for touch, and it paid dividends when No 8 Alix Popham scored after some good work from new Wales squad member Lee Byrne.

Bowen missed the extras, but home fans were more than happy to be only two points in arrears after a poor first-half performance.

Dafydd Jones made his first appearance of the season as a blood replacement for Jonathan Mills in the opening minute of the second half. Jones’ return was cheered by the Stradey Park fans, but they had little else to make a noise about. Paterson edged the visitors further ahead with a penalty goal from in front, and made it 13-5 with a third goal after some good work from Webster.

But the introduction of Jones and prop Martyn Madden brought the Scarlets back into the match. Bowen kicked a penalty goal from in front, before the home side’s mis-firing lineout finally put a move together.

With time up on the clock, they gathered possession and drove Jones over the try-line. And Bowen’s kick never looked like missing.

If our scrum is at full strength, then they are very good. We do have good kickers, but it can be bad sometimes - I just hope not on Saturday.

I hope our 16->22 are as good, but we saw on Sunday that when they are on for the whole match, they could be better. As replacements they are excellent, but perhaps for 1>15 they need to work harder. I mean this for most, but not Simon Webster. He is our Super-Substitute!

Gunners v Toulouse - Saturday 10th December, KO 4pm

********************************************************************************

****************************

After the Gunners' shock defeat at the hands of the Warriors last week it's time

to get our season back on track. If the Gunners are to progress to the

knock-out stages of the Heineken Cup this is a must-win game.

Of course the last time Toulouse came to Edinburgh they won the Cup they are now

defending; but if you've been following the Gunners for more than a couple of

years you'll remember that on the occasion prior to that, when Toulouse were

also defending the Heineken Cup, they were outplayed and soundly beaten by the

Gunners. On that day the crowd played their part in ensuring that Toulouse

lived up to the reputation of French teams for not travelling well. It's up to

us to do the same today. WE MUST PLAY OUR PART IN INTIMIDATING THE TOULOUSE

PLAYERS BY CHEERING OUR BOYS AT EVERY OPPORTUNITY!!!!.

Remember, Toulouse have lost three of their last four games in the French Top

14, including last Friday's defeat at the hands of lowly Brive, ranked 7 places

below the Gunners in the Eurotable rankings. We've already seen off Wasps, the

Heineken Cup champions in 2004 and the winners of the Zurich Premiership for

each of the last three seasons; now its time to see off the defending champions

as well.

So raise the roof and make as much noise as you can to ensure Toulouse go home

with their tail between their legs! And don't forget to come up to the Public

Bar in the President’s Suite both before the game (from 3pm) and afterwards to

meet the players and your fellow supporters.

Gunners' Team for Saturday

********************************************************************************

****************************

Edinburgh Gunners’ interim head coach Todd Blackadder said: “We’ve taken a good

hard look at ourselves following last week’s loss to Glasgow and we’ve trained

really well with good enthusiasm. The only way to respond is to put in a winning

performance against Toulouse on Saturday.”

Blackadder has made 11 changes, one positional, following the 46-6 loss to the

Glasgow Warriors at Firhill on Sunday. In the back line, captain Chris Paterson

returns to the wing, Marcus Di Rollo comes back into the side at outside centre

in place of Peter Jorgensen who moves one place infield for Matt Dey and Phil

Godman starts at stand-off.

In the pack, the front row is replaced by Dave Hewett, Dougie Hall and Craig

Smith while Scott Murray returns at lock and Matt Mustchin, Simon Taylor and

Allister Hogg all start in the back row. Alastair Kellock was not available for

selection while he recovers from a shoulder injury.

Blackadder said: “We’ve re-jigged the side and this is our best available team.

I fully believe we can win on Saturday and if we want to beat sides like

Toulouse we have to take them on. They are the European champions but any side

can be vulnerable.”

I hope our 16->22 are as good, but we saw on Sunday that when they are on for the whole match, they could be better. As replacements they are excellent, but perhaps for 1>15 they need to work harder. I mean this for most, but not Simon Webster. He is our Super-Substitute!
