French missing in action

By TAINE RANDALL - Sunday News

France have shown their hand on this tour just by the team they have selected.

They said a while ago they were committed to sending out their best team for both tests and the disregard they have for international rugby annoys me.

Eight of their squad are still in France playing in this weekend's Top 14 final.

It's hard to know how the first test will turn out because the French struggled in the Six Nations and their coach, Marc Lievremont, has been under pressure for a while. Lievremont isn't exactly from left field but he's done some things which have stunned even the most liberal French rugby supporters.

His selections have been offbeat, he's picked people out of position and his inconsistent coaching style has been reflected in how up and down this French team has been.

The French have had some good victories over the past couple of years but they have also had some very bad losses.

France are lacking real world-class superstar players. A lot of them are well known in France but not a lot of them would come close to being in any world XVs.

I was taught tthe French had these really gnarly front rows but the standard of their front-row play has slipped over the past couple of years. Their forward packs aren't as brutish as they have been in the past.

Sebastien Chabal is a player who draws a lot of attention but anyone in the northern hemisphere who is a reasonably good tackler becomes known as a massive hitter.

When I was playing there, I could see he was a physical player but most teams here have got five Maori or Pacific Island players like that.

In the past he has come here and put Ali Williams and Chris Masoe on their bums but it's nothing that we're not used to from our bi-impact players.

The reason he gets so many raps is because he's almost out on his own in the northern hemisphere for playing that sort of rugged rugby.

They use him in the second row more now which is an absolute waste because he's not tall enough. He's a lot better as a No6 or No8.

A lot of the French backs are toilers, nothing special, and you would have Sitiveni Sivivatu or Josevata Rokocoko ahead of them any day.

I think northern hemisphere rugby's standard at the moment is poor. Leinster winning the Heineken Cup hasn't got much to do with them playing better, it's more to do with other teams playing worse.

The French and English teams have really deteriorated and it's not a surprise when you look at how many end-of-season player prizes there have gone to overseas players.

This leads me to another point a lot of players from New Zealand go to Europe attracted by the bright lights and lifestyle change.

Ad Feedback

But the reality is the weather is bad, the rugby can be absolutely dire, and for the most part, the Premiership is NPC-level rugby that's pretty drab.

The sport doesn't have anything approaching its profile in this country..

Chris Jack's comment this week that it's "easy rugby" in England tells a bit of a story.

If you've still got ambitions to test yourself or play at a high level, don't go to Europe. They're going over there for the money and are mercenary rugby players.

It's all well and good if that's what you're after but some players seem keen to come back now, like Chris Jack and Luke McAlister.

It is going to be an inexperienced All Blacks team, especially in the forwards, for the two-test series. Liam Messam, Kieran Read and Adam Thomson in the loosies and Isaac Ross with Brad Thorn in the second row, with Bryn Evans on the bench.

Lack of experience is one thing but you also have to look at whether they've got the right combinations in the squad to start with.

Messam hasn't played at No 8 all through the Super 14 and Thomson also didn't play at No 7 right through the competition.

Choosing two relatively new guys and playing them out of position as a new combination is worrying.

I don't know if this combination is right. It doesn't look like they've got a really strong ball carrier or intimidatory presence in the back row and against the French that could be a big mistake.

It will be a big test for Jimmy Cowan, playing in his home franchise. He had a good Super 14, but his combination with Stephen Donald is going to be important because there are some good halfbacks in New Zealand.

He's carrying on from a good season last year, when he owned the No9 jersey but he's going to be under a lot of pressure in this test, especially if he doesn't get help from his forward pack.
