Borders to make decision today on citing O'Driscoll

DAVID FERGUSON

THE Borders will decide today whether or not to cite Brian O'Driscoll for an alleged stamp on Nikki Walker's head during Friday night's Celtic League match at Netherdale.

The Ireland and British and Irish Lions captain was leading Leinster only a week after beating Toulouse to qualify for the semi-finals of the Heineken Cup. Despite fielding a full-strength side the Irish province found the Reivers a tougher nut to crack and eventually won by just a solitary point, 35-34, to put them on top of the Celtic League.

However, in the second half the Irish centre appeared to stamp on Walker when the Reivers winger was grounded. None of the match officials appeared to see the incident, but Steve Bates, the Borders coach, admitted it had angered his staff.

He said: "What happened was in full view of our coaches and subs at the touchline, but also a lot of supporters, including young kids, so we are very concerned. Fortunately, Nikki doesn't seem to have suffered anything serious, but we are looking at the footage carefully and are seriously considering citing O'Driscoll."

O'Driscoll was cited in the opening Six Nations match after being involved in two incidents, where he appeared to be rucking dangerously but the independent commissioner, decided he had no case to answer.

Border Reivers decide against a citing

Border Reivers have decided against citing Brian O'Driscoll after a stamping incident in the Celtic League match between Borders and Leinster last Friday.

There was widespread anger in the Borders camp at the incident, which was not seen by the match officials.

"What happened was in full view of our coaches and subs at the touchline, but also a lot of supporters, including young kids, so we are very concerned," Bates told The Scotsman newspaper at the time.

"Fortunately, Nikki doesn't seem to have suffered anything serious, but we are looking at the footage carefully and are seriously considering citing O'Driscoll."

But the review in the colder light of day appears to have quelled the anger a bit.

"After careful studying of the video footage, the decision was taken not to pursue the matter," said a Reivers spokesman on Thursday.

O'Driscoll was cited in the wake of Ireland's win over Italy in the Six Nations after being involved in two incidents of 'dangerous rucking', but the independent commissioner decided he had no case to answer for those incidents either.
